NiPoPoWs enable trustless sidechains through Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) proofs and is resistant to such attacks while also being small enough that they can actually be sent over the network.
While "compact SPV proofs" have been proposed previously, they've proved vulnerable to certain attacks, ones that would potentially allow miners to steal money left on the sidechains.
To put it simply, NIPoPoWs can be of great use in sidechains. Two or more separate chains can integrate through NIPoPoWs without the need for change in other chains. Such integration would erase the need for, for example, "Wrapped Tokens," tokens that rely on DAO governance.
